This striking mural was quarried from the “Sandwich Horizon” layer in our private quarry in southwestern Wyoming. It features over 220 Knightia eocaena, an extinct herring-like fish from the Eocene Epoch, preserved in exceptional detail. This dense grouping records a mass mortality event, possibly linked to volcanic activity, which disrupted the lake’s ecosystem through sudden oxygen loss or the release of toxins. Events like this wiped out entire schools of fish in moments, leaving behind a dramatic scene that fossilized over 50 million years. This richly textured stone highlights the motion and scale of the event.
The mural is finished with beveled edges and is backed in wood with a built-in French cleat. This mural ships in a custom-made wood crate, fully insured against loss or damage. It arrives ready for immediate installation.
